Our Vision

River Taw Farms grassfed beef operations are located in Cherryville, NC where Cleveland, Gaston & Lincoln counties merge about 45 minutes west of Charlotte Airport.   We are situated in the Piedmont region in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We are one of the largest grassfed beef farms in the Carolinas and we are committed to breeding Black Angus cattle in a natural, sustainable way.

We have 1,700 acres of pasture, trees and water and a herd of 300 carefully selected young cows.  We breed our grassfed calves from 15 bulls rated at the top of the US registered Black Angus herd.

From birth our grassfed cattle receive only their mother’s milk and a 100% grass diet free of herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones.  They are rotated weekly to fresh pastures and never held in confinement.

Our commitment to humanely raised, healthful, local grassfed beef that you can trust is supported by our independent certifications from the American Grassfed Association and the Animal Welfare Approved Program.

We have sourced the majority of our registered cattle from Yon Family Farms in Ridge Spring, SC and Primus Genetics in Millers Creek, NC.

13 of our 15 registered bulls hail from Yon Family Farms with EPDs at the very top of the US Angus herd. We have selected these bulls for Calving Ease, Birth Weight, Weaning, Yearling, Milk, Marbling, Ribeye, $W and $Beef.  Their scores and appearance are a credit to Yon Family Farms’ success.  The work done by the Yon family over a generation has produced animals with a good thick appearance, sound feet and quiet dispositions.  We use all natural service, no artificial insemination and no embryo transfer. We also acquired one third of our heifers from the Yon Family.

Primus Genetics selected cattle from some of the leading Angus herds in the United States such as Stevenson-Basin Angus, Beartooth Angus, Express Ranches, Gardnier Angus and Wehrmann Angus.  At their total dispersal sale in November 2008 we selected a diverse group of 68 heifers with traits designed to optimize feed conversion and growth.

The bottom line for us on trait selection for our grassfed cattle is to minimize the need for birthing assistance with a target weight around 75lbs and maximize weight production given our exclusive use of grass and our own hay to feed our herd year round.
